GORILLA TREKKING PLANNING

The trek is one morning. The trip around it is the whole plan.

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is often the reason for the trip. But a trek is a few hours on one morning -- and everything around it requires its own planning: where to stay the night before, how to get to Musanze, what to do on non-trekking days, where to go afterward. AskRwanda helps you plan the trek and the trip together so the logistics serve the experience, not the other way around.

Start Planning Your Trek

Plan the morning. Plan the trip around it.

The permit is step one. The logistics are everything after.

A gorilla trekking permit secures your place. What it does not tell you is how to get to Musanze from Kigali, where to stay the night before that feels right for the occasion, what the trek morning actually involves physically, what to wear, what to bring, and what to do with the days before and after.

These questions do not have one correct answer. They depend on your fitness, your budget, your pace, and the rest of your Rwanda plan.

The best gorilla trek is part of the best trip.

Most travelers combine gorilla trekking with other experiences -- Akagera safari, Lake Kivu, Nyungwe, or additional time in Kigali.

The sequencing matters. Travel distances in Rwanda are manageable but not negligible. An itinerary that puts Akagera immediately after Volcanoes involves a long cross-country drive. One that sequences Volcanoes then Lake Kivu then Nyungwe follows a natural geographic arc.

The workspace helps you see these connections before you commit.

Trek preparation, trip connection.

Logistics around the trek -- accommodation options near Volcanoes, transport from Kigali, timing.

Physical preparation context -- what to expect on the day, general fitness considerations.

Before and after -- what to do in the days surrounding the trek, how to sequence other destinations.

The broader trip -- how the trek fits into your overall Rwanda itinerary.

Planning, not permits.

AskRwanda does not sell or process gorilla trekking permits. Permits are obtained through the Rwanda Development Board or authorized booking partners.

The workspace helps you plan around the permit -- logistics, preparation, and the rest of the trip. The permit acquisition itself is a separate process.
